Why go slim
Slim batteries trade height for length, so they slide under a rear seat, behind a trim panel or along a drawer system where a standard battery won't fit. They free up your tub or cargo area and keep weight low and central.
They're popular in dual cab utes, vans and wagons where there's no room under the bonnet for a second battery.
Measure before you buy
- Length, width and height of the space, with the seat in every position it can move to.
- Terminal clearance. Leave room for lugs, cable bends and terminal covers. Cables need a gentle bend, not a sharp kink.
- Terminal position. End or top terminals change how easily you can run cables in a tight spot.
- Access. Think about how you'll reach the fuse and terminals later.
What to check in the battery
- Capacity: slim batteries are commonly 80 to 120Ah. Check it covers your daily use.
- BMS discharge rating: make sure it handles your fridge, inverter and any other loads together.
- Charge rating: confirm it suits your DC-DC charger's output current.
- Low-temperature protection if you travel in cold areas.
- Bluetooth monitoring, handy when the battery is hidden away.
Installing it safely
- Secure mounting. A battery inside the cabin must be held firmly with a proper bracket or tie-down. Loose straps aren't enough in a sudden stop.
- Fuse close to the battery on the positive cable, rated to protect that cable.
- Protect the cables where they pass through floors or trim, with grommets and conduit.
- Cover the terminals so nothing metal can short across them.
- Charge it with a DC-DC charger set to a lithium profile, especially with a smart alternator.
Why lithium suits in-cabin use
Sealed LiFePO4 batteries don't need topping up and don't vent gas in normal use, which is one reason they're a common choice inside the cabin. Always follow the battery maker's instructions for where and how it can be mounted.
Quick FAQ
Can a slim battery run a fridge? Yes. A 100Ah slim lithium battery gives the same usable capacity as a standard 100Ah lithium battery.
Do I need a DC-DC charger? In most modern vehicles, yes. See our DC-DC charger size guide.
